Adsense is for suckers

It’s an old post, but I decided to check the comments for any hidden gold, there some monetizing ideas and it does no harm to remind yourself. There’s an update which starts:

The general theme seems to be that Adsense is for suckers, and that most people with a little effort can do better (more stats at the Data Mining blog).

Auguste Rodin Gets His First Adsense Check for 6 Months BloggingI use Adsense but not on my personal sites. Sometimes I am asked to setup Adsense on a customer site, it’s a growing trend and appears to be considered as a way to cover costs for programming and design. Strange really because programmers and designers are being judged not on the quality of what they are asked to do but how well their work attracts Adsense dollars. Whatever happened to the concept the customers story or product should do that?

Why would you want Adsense to read your site and place competitive adverts on them? Do you really want your competitors to steal your business for a 5c click?

Some bloggers think the same way. They don’t look beyond Adsense and believe nothing will pay as much. Let’s hope they are not in a long tail. According to Alex Iskold you can make money on the long tail but not in the long tail.

There is life and money beyond Adsense and the long tail. If that’s where your expertise is, being forewarned of the problems you face, and how long it will take, will make it easier to decide if it’s for you. Keep in mind the quality of the design and programming on your site have less to do with it’s fortune than content and purpose.
